Our village sits on a limestone cliff and below us, three rivers converge and the Flats stretch away towards the north. Close by there is an Ordnance Survey grid square with nothing in it. Chris and I walked there to look once. It was just a big wheat field. So technically not empty. Our house is a square red-brick building called Box Farm. There isn’t a farm anymore, but I suppose we live in what’s left of it. Our back garden is called Low Acres, like a field, with a broken hedge down one side, but we don’t really need fences or anything. We’ve only got one neighbour, Sybil Ray. She’s sort of like our grandmother. We call her Gamma, obviously.ABOUT SHORTFIRE PRESS:Shortfire Press is a new digital short story publisher specialising in stories from new and established authors, available to download one by one.‘An iTunes for the written word’ INDEPENDENT‘Have no doubt about it, the short story is back’ GUARDIAN
