(I received this book for free as part of First Reads giveaways).(This review may contain spoilers). The first thing I thought, when seeing this book cover on , was that it looked very much like one of those old-style films. The second thing, when I received the book, was surprise over how short it was.I often find that, with shorter books, there isn't enough character development - or at least enough for me to be satisfied with. That wasn't the case with this book. It worked quite well, being w [...]

On the plus side, I found the story a bit different. Jenny was an everyday type of person just trying to survive. Well she does have some martial arts skills which puts her in a place she never dreamed she would be in. A dream job comes her way because of it. But is everything truly as good as it appears? At first Jenny is cool with everything but she begins to be uneasy and some of the questions mentioned in the book blurb start cropping up. Some of the story is also written from the perspectiv [...]

What’s this? A quick 90-page novella of a story about a down-on-her-luck Jenny who moves to New York City in hopes of getting a minimum wage job to cover her rent, only to find herself hired by a security firm and leading a secret battle against aliens.I know, right? The first half of this story has a sort of noir spy novel feel meets X-Files. As the story rolls across the halfway point and the action ramps up, the tone shifts to something more YA and frenetic – a cacophony of action and roma [...]

Really really didn't like this book. The writing is poor and the story is lacking in depth. - - Received copy through NetGalley - -L

This is an entertaining novella (just under 100 pages) with a likable and relatable protagonist who finds herself in very unusual circumstances filled with uncertainty and doubt. It's set in York, Great Britain. It's got some funky science-y things going on, and some awkward but so very normal interpersonal things going on, and it's unclear who the good guys are. The uncertainty is good, really.I believe it's a good sign that I wanted it to continue when it ended. I'd like to know more about the [...]

It started very well but went south somewhere in the middle The main problem was the benefit of hindsight on the POV's part. First I thought it was an error, but it turned out to be conceptual, which only made it worse because it didn't fit with the story's structure, and made the main character look dumb. I don't mind stupid characters, but when she's clueless and making excuses for herself? No, thanks.MINOR SPOILERAnd then there's the bit at the end, where she says: "I promised Navy that this [...]

This is a very very short book and I think this is why I'm only giving it 3 stars as I think more could have been said about the characters and their motivations. It's all told through the eyes of Jenny - so you have the one-sided element there. And also, she's very typical, just out of school, looking for work, scores and interview at a bit corporation. Turns out they're aliens, or maybe they're not, maybe everyone's an alien, you can't ever be sure with the way that it's been written. Jenny me [...]

I received a copy of this book from the author as part of the #ReadSelfPublished Giveaway. In this short (92 page) book, we meet Jenny Harding, a confident, spunky heroine who may be looking for a job but finds a mission instead. She immediately captures your attention (and your heart) by telling her story, hinting at a future yet to come. I read this book in one sitting- not only because it was short, but because I simply couldn’t put it down. The plot is fast-paced, the characters interesting [...]

Maybe a 3.5.I've never heard about this book until the lovely writer decided to send me a copy of it. In Codename Omega: Omega Rising we are presented to Jenny Harding, a girl on her twenties, who got a job as security guard, even thought she has no experience whatsoever, in a big tech company. As said on the synopsis, she has to try to stop a group of thieves who's been stealing some of the company's products. The opening paragraphs is one of the best I've ever read, but the rest of the book, f [...]

An excellent second book from this up-and-coming new author. This is the story of Jenny, a young woman who naively takes a job in a new city. She is suddenly plunged into a hidden world, more dangerous and strange than she could have possibly imagined. The fast pace works well for this length of novella, with plenty of action packed into its 92 pages. I especially enjoyed the well-researched fight scenes, which demonstrate the author's obvious experience in martial arts. The novella is a complete s [...]

This story was a nice introduction to a series, showcasing how an “average” person got caught up in an alien conspiracy—becoming a hero, costume and all. I enjoyed the alien technology, adapted for human use. This had it all…a little action…conspiracy…scifi…mystery…and romance. The plot was well done. Despite really enjoying the creative concepts of the story, this story is told first person, filtered through the main character's perspective. It gave it an old-time detective stor [...]

When this arrived,I have to admit,I was alarmed at the lack of pages,a very 'flimsy' book, which appeared ,on first viewing to be a quick, 'pass the time' read. However,I was proven wrong. The cover does the written piece an incredible justice, stunning art work, and almost 'movie' trailer in it appearance. The central character is well structured, with enough detail to make her real, yet leave a little to the imagination also. A read I'd give 8/10 . However,my only concern is, that when amongst [...]

I was blessed enough to be able to download a free ebook copy of the book via Netgally as part of the "Read Now" option(Meaning that I didn't have to be approved by the publisher first) in exchange for my honest review of the book which is as follows:From the start of the book I was unsure about the reasons behind the main character's actions however the storyline moved along at a fast enough pace to keep me interested. A lot of stuff felt a little bit too easy/ coincidental however I'm still in [...]

Omega rising by Jessica Meats is a sci-fi and fantasy and teens and ya read. Jenny Harding has no money, no qualifications and no career history. I received this book from Netgalley for an honest review. My actual rating is 2.5.This is more of a novella than a novel. While this is better written than many similar stories, the story itself is less than stellar. We are introduced to Jenny, a twentysomething fresh out of University who has moved to York, England to find work. What happens next strains believability as she is recruited to a strange company in security despite no background other than martial arts including Krav Maga. She is ev [...]

I really enjoyed this book. Jenny Harding is looking for a job and finds one with a company that appears to be the good guys. She discovers that this is not the case and this mistake causes problems. It's short, but I really didn't notice this because I got sucked into the story and so was surprised when I came to the end. Can't wait to read the next book.I received this free from NetGalley and the publisher for a review.
