A Touch of Wonder Reviews

  • Cynthia Egbert

I am ashamed to realize that I have never reviewed this book here on before now. And after it has saved me so many times in my life. I am grateful that Stephen Palmer mentioned it in a recent blog post so that I was compelled to revisit it and even offer it as a Christmas gift to a number of people that I love. Get your hands on a copy of this book and then just open it to any chapter and read it. It need not be read cover to cover, in fact, that is kinda doing this book a disservice. Just open [...]

I've read this book a hundred times, starting when I was just a kid. We even borrowed liberally from one of the stories for our wedding vows, nearly fifteen years ago. Sweet and simple and soulful and satisfying.

A Touch of Wonder by Arthur Gordon is a collection of descriptive essays on family and life along the Georgia coast. The book is a meditation, which according to the subtitle will “Help People Stay in Love with Life.”As the book blurb suggests, Gordon elevates ordinary days to the extraordinary by paying attention to detail: “wedding vows spoken again the background of wind and waves . . . a small boy’s first glimpse of shooting stars . . . the antiqued pages of an ancestor’s letters . I just pulled this book out again from a shelf where I have my Keepers -- books I know I'll want to read again. It a treasury of wonders reminding you of the beauty and opportunity of every day. I have a friend who is depressed and I'm going to lend it to her. I'm disappointed in myself because then I wondered - what if she doesn't return it to me? But I believe books come to you when you need them. So I'll trust that belief and offer this uplifting book to her hoping that it will help her as mu [...]

This was a marvelous inspirational book. The gist of which is basically how the small things in life can so improve the quality of living. All the tiny moments of beauty that we encounter, if we only take the time to notice. One of my favourite parts: "Love life. Be grateful for it always. And show your gratitude by not shying away from it's challenges. Try always to live a little bit beyond your capacities. You'll find that you never suceed."

"An invitation to fall in love with life."This is a fabulous book! It is a reflective writing in which the author shares events in his life and what he has learned. it is moving, tear jerking, funny, and so much more! It makes simple experiences (we all have) become extraordinary events. It has made me look closer at the “common happenings” in my life and has enabled me to see the miraculous found within. I would recommend this book to all!

I cherish this book. A classic, written with warmth, humor and inspiration from a classic storyteller. This book influenced not only my writing style but my outlook on life. Was privileged to correspond with Mr. Gordon just a few years before he died. If you've not read it, it can be had for pennies as a used copy on and will be the best loose change you've ever spent.

Read this for book club - it was really good! Just short stories that help you to remember not to take for granted all the little things in life, the beauties around you, and especially relationships. They are all feel good stories that make one look at themselves and see where some improvement can be made. I definitely recommend this book!

Great go-to book when you need a little perspective on life or some inspiration. A few of his chapters I could not relate to as we do not share the same religious beliefs, but a couple I will return to again and again.

Went into this intending to get a nice little life lesson every day. A quarter of the way in, all I've gotten is random, boring anecdotes. Shelving this for now, possibly forever but may revisit.
